Waltzing Matilda

“Unofficial Australian National Anthem” , Lyrics by A.B. Paterson

“Once a jolly swagman camped by a billabong,

Under the shade of a Coolibah tree,

And he sang as he watched and waited till his billy boil,
You’ll come a Waltzing Matilda with me.

Waltzing Matilda, Waltzing Matilda,
You’ll come a Waltzing Matilda with me,
And he sang as he watched and waited till his billy boil
You’ll come a Waltzing Matilda with me.
………………..
Down came a jumbuck to drink at that billabong
Up jumped the swagman and grabbed him with glee,
And he sang as he shoved that jumbuck in his tucker bag
You’ll come a Waltzing Matilda with me.

Waltzing Matilda, Waltzing Matilda,
You’ll come a Waltzing Matilda with me,
And he sang as he shoved that jumbuck in his tucker bag
You’ll come a Waltzing Matilda with me.
…………………
Up rode the squatter mounted on his thorough-bred
Down came the troopers One Two Three
Whose that jolly jumbuck you’ve got in your tucker bag
You’ll come a Waltzing Matilda with me.

Waltzing Matilda Waltzing Matilda
You’ll come a Waltzing Matilda with me
Whose that jolly jumbuck you’ve got in your tucker-bag
You’ll come a Waltzing Matilda with me.
………………….
Up jumped the swagman sprang in to the billabong
You’ll never catch me alive said he,
And his ghost may be heard as you pass by that billabong
You’ll come a Waltzing Matilda with me.

Waltzing Matilda Waltzing Matilda
You’ll come a Waltzing Matilda with me
And his ghost may be heard as you pass by that billabong
You’ll come a Waltzing Matilda with me.

  1. OMG … I haven’t thought of this song/tune in years!!!! It was a favorite camp song when I was younger! Thanks for the stroll down memory lane. I look forward to listening to the video when I return home from tour trip with my mom. My phone is uncooperative! 😀

  2. This song sparked a memory from years ago. I was probably 9 years old and a “Brownie”.
(aka Girl Scout). Our Brownie troop danced and sang this song for some type of Girl scout function. I had forgotten the words but have always remembered the tune. Thanks
for sharing as this song took me back to a “better” memory in my Life. ;o) “Catch a Hug”…

  3. Good one. Don’t you love all the Aussie vernacular? I have several blogging friends from Down Under and they never fail to delight me. I’d sort of forgotten about Waltzing Matilda. I can’t hear that song without remembering the movie “On the Beach.” Haunting. Did you see it?

    1. Patti,
Don’t remember if I saw “On the Beach”. I can see a movie or read a book or watch a TV episode one week and then the next month see it again without realizing until the ending that I had already seen/read it! AND THAT’S THE TRUTH!
