The museum houses a collection of Impressionist, Post-Impressionist, Modern and Contemporary works. The museum is housed in landmark building designed by Frank Lloyd Wright. It is in a unique, cylindrical building, wider at the top than at the bottom, a “temple of the spirit”. Its unique ramp gallery extends up from ground level in a long, continuous spiral along the outer edges of the building to end just under the ceiling skylight. The main exhibits are the Pergamon Altar from the 2nd century BC, with a 113 meters (371 ft) long sculptural frieze depicting the struggle of the gods and the giants, and the Gate of Miletus from Roman antiquity.

What a great idea! Why didn’t I think of this? I used to teach art, and my high school students studied, among others, Alexander Calder. One of the most rewarding things my students did was take photos of themselves standing on that circular stairs, overlooking Calder’s sculpture.
